As I remember it, disco killed rock, but you could still dance to it. Then came urban cowboy which not only killed Disco, but also killed dancing in bars, and without dancing, no need for live music. Finally, Rap killed everything and has lasted forever and that is when the music died.

Almost sounds like you could throw a "lizard - Spock" in there too. Don't forget that jazz killed big band, and rock killed jazz.
